Read with OLSHF!

In an effort to further conversations and education around Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, the DEI Committee is excited to announce the new OLSHF Book Club, Read with OLSHF! Each year, we'll feature two books - one non-fiction and the other literature.

We'll then host quarterly meetings, two for each book so that people can join in the conversation at their convenience.

Topic: We Can't Talk About That at Work! by Mary-Frances Winters (pages xi - 86)

We Can't Talk about That at Work!: How to Talk about Race, Religion, Politics, and Other Polarizing Topics

Race, religion, and politics are sensitive subjects. Many folks steer clear of these topics at work, but ignoring the issue is not always the answer. Mary-Frances Winters argues that it is not what we talk about, but how we talk about it that matters. This is a guide for starting productive, inclusive conversations that respect differences, find common ground, and take the first steps towards healing invisible divides in the professional world.

Spider Woman's Granddaughters: Traditional Tales and Contemporary Writing by Native American Women

Native American scholar, literary critic, poet, and novelist Paula Gunn Allen, who is herself a Laguna Pueblo-Sioux Indian, became increasingly aware in her academic career that the writings of Native Americans, especially women, have been marginalized by the Western literary canon. Allen set out to understand why this was so and, more importantly, to remedy the situation. The result is this powerful collection of traditional tales, biographical writings, and contemporary short stories.
